Folk Art Miniature Portrait Lady and Dog

TRINITY ANTIQUES
This wonderful Anglo/American school folk art portrait of an attractive young lady was produced in the year 1849. The artist has signed the painting to the bottom reading ‘W Murray, fecit, 1849’. W Murray was a portraitist and profilist who was active during the middle of the 19th century. Few examples of his work are known. This is a unique opportunity to own such a charming painting by a rarely seen artist.

The sitter is wearing traditional early Victorian dark slate grey/black silk dress with narrow sleeves, high neck and voluminous skirt. We love her fancy lace collar embroidered with pink silk embellishment, also her large gold vermeil brooch and her striking pink embroidered lappet. She has typical hair fashion of the 1840s, center parting, hair looped over the ears with a cascade of ringlets to the shoulder. The sitter is depicted holding her beloved pet, a cute tan Jack Russell Terrier tucked beneath her left arm. The watercolor painting is on card and is housed behind old bubbled glass in its original wood frame with a gilt slip.

To the backing paper we find a previous owners inscription reading ‘Padmore House 1975’. Padmore House is a large country house located in the Village of Whippingham on the Isle of White. In 1974 the house was turned into a popular Hotel.

This all original signed portrait has wide appeal and we guarantee that it will delight.

Measuring: Frame width 6.75 inch (17 cm) by height 7 5/8 inch (19.5 cm). Aperture width 4 1/8 inch (10.5 cm) by height 5 inch (13 cm).

Condition: A few tiny specks of flaking to the gum Arabic surface of the sitters dress. Two small bumps to the wood veneer corners, extremely minor and very common with frames of this period.
