French Watercolour Portrait Regency Lady

TRINITY ANTIQUES
This wonderful portrait of a young Georgian lady dates to the early 19th century to 1835. This glowing watercolor on card has a fantastic mellow and aged look to it. The sitters clothing and gently faded gilt frame are just perfectly coordinated. The sitter is wearing traditional Georgian era dress of the 1830s with the voluminous leg of mutton/ Gigot sleeves and raised waistline. We love her elaborate hairstyle with the cascading ringlets that frame her pretty face. The painting is signed and dated by the artist ‘Paul Brindeau 1835’. David Paul Brindeau was a French artist. We have found a certificate of arrival card to enter the port of London on the 11th May 1837; where he is listed as ‘David Paul Brindeau Artiste Painter France’ (we will include a copy of this certificate).

This charming watercolor is housed behind old bubbled glass within a period gilt Gesso frame; there is some indecipherable old French text to the original backing board. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves the Georgian portraiture as it will display excellently.

Measuring: Frame width 9 inch (23 cm) by height 10 inch (25.5 cm). Frame depth 1.5 inch (4 cm). Aperture width 5 inch (12.5 cm) by height 6.25 inch (16 cm).

Condition: Some wear to the old frame in the form of bumps to the Gesso, shrinkage to the corner joints and areas of old gilt touch up. As the signature was mostly obscured by the frame, we have opened the frame to both clean the glass and photograph the watercolor in full for you. Please note the items shown in the final two images are not included.
