Georgian Miniature Folk Art Paintings

TRINITY ANTIQUES
These are our favorite type of miniature paintings from the late 18th century, highly decorative with that slightly naive, folk art feel. They are a divine pair of well executed watercolor paintings upon card. Their miniature proportions making them the perfect size to brighten any wall and their sanded texture lemon gilt frames make them just glow!!

These late 18th century hand painted subjects are utterly charming. We see a young farmer wearing a hat, linen smock and rather dapper blue neck scarf. He holds his scythe under one arm and a freshly cut wheat sheath under the other. His female partner again wears a hat to protect her from the hot summer sunshine. She wears a fitted jacket with boned bodice/ corselet (as this is a rural lass she would be still probably wearing older style fashions of the 1780's period). She has short curled hair and wears a ribbon necklace. She holds a wicker basket filled with freshly baked bread rolls in one hand, the other she holds a shopping list. The rural idyll was a popular subject in the 18th century. There is much symbolism conveyed in this romantic pair of paintings related to nature, harvest and the natural order of life. Housed under old bubbled glass and within their original lemon gilt part sand textured frames, complete with original top suspension rings.....they are ready to hang.

Size: Frame 6.25" by 6.75" by 1.25" deep. Visible aperture 3.25" by 3.75", actual portrait 1.75" by 2" approx.

Condition: The actual watercolor paintings are in excellent order, the colors remaining bright and crisp. The paper/card ground has some slight darkening with age as unbleached paper was used at this time. There is dust trapped under the glass. There are a few light knocks to the gilt Gesso edges that have been touched up in the past and age darkening to the bottom edge of the male's frame. The original backing paper is flaking to the reverse of the male's frame.
