Politics William Pitt The Younger Portrait Plaque

A handsome Georgian hand colored plaster plaque of British Whig politician William Pitt The Younger (1759- to 1806). William Pitt the younger was the youngest ever British Prime Minister, elected during the reign of George III to ministerial office at age 24 years in 1783, then again between 1804 to 1806. His premiership was marked by significant conflict in Europe against France. William Wilberforce said that, "For personal purity, disinterestedness and love of this country, I have never known his equal."

Housed in a period correct 1790s turned and stained pearwood frame (no glass as was original) with original gilt metal top hanger. We see a hand painted high relief plaster plaque of Pitt facing left. This very crisp relief plaque is after the John Flaxman model of Pitt produced in 1787. In the 1780's Wedgwood created two types of medallion using this Flaxman model, Wedgwood produced their Pitt reliefs' in Black basalt and Jasperware. Our plaque is exactly the same moulding as the Wedgwood examples. Our example with its hand painted coloring brings this Georgian politician to life.

Size: Oval frame 15 cm (6") tall by 13 cm ( 5") across by a deep 3.5 cm(1.25").

Condition: Good original patina to both plaque and frame. This is an original Georgian plaster plaque and plaster by its very nature is fragile. This plaque has some historic but stable cracks across its surface. There is an old area of missing plaster to his neck. There are signs of old touch ups to his crimson frock coat - all to be expected with an item of this material and age. It does not distract from its appeal. Fresh backing paper and tape added to secure this items passage for another 100 years.

This is a handsome example from 200 years ago. This is the perfect historical conversation piece for your study gallery wall.
