Reverse Print on Glass George IV Prince Of Wales

TRINITY ANTIQUES
This scarce and decorative Georgian period reverse mezzotint on glass dates to the early 19th century, circa 1815.

The sitter is George IV Prince of Wales, (1762 – 1830); due to his father George III's mental illness he was Prince Regent 1811-1820, and then reigned as King George IV from 1820 – 1830). This engraving is after the English royal portrait of the Prince by Sir William Beechey, R.A. (b 1753 – d 1839) with some similarities to the 1815 Thomas Lawrence portrait. The print has been trimmed to fit the frame; however it could have been a proof before letters, which could explain why the publisher’s details have been omitted. With its lovely old wavy glass and original Hogarth stained wood frame, this is a handsome addition to any interior.

Measuring: Frame 12.75” (32 cm) by 15 1/8” (38.5 cm). Frame depth 0.75” (2.5 cm). Aperture 10 5/8” (27 cm) by 13 2/8” (33.5 cm).

Condition: There are some tiny losses to the plain edges of the paper from where it has been trimmed, the glass has cracked in the top left corner and been repaired from the reverse with strong stable glue. This reverse print has received a new backing board with the sitter and artist retained from the old backing paper. The original period frame is in good condition with a nice dry patina and of course some minor surface wear which is to be expected with its vast age.
