Royal Silk Pincushion George III Queen Charlotte

TRINITY ANTIQUES
A rare Regency period silk pinwheel design pincushion offered in excellent, museum condition; complete with provenance later date stamped, signed and dated letter of 1839.

This beautiful silk pincushion was made to commemorate the death in 1818 of King George III's wife, Queen Charlotte. We see a beautiful printed engraving to the front of Queen Charlotte with printed text around the perimeter reading "Queen Charlotte Died Nov 17th 1818 Aged 74 Years". To the reverse is an equally handsome printed engraving of the King with printed script around the perimeter reading " King George III. Born June 4th 1738". To the base of the King is the engravers name but this is too difficult to decipher.

See a similar Duke of York silk commemorative pincushion on page 79, chapter Georgian Crafts of the book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries by Nerylla Taunton. We also note how similar such printed roundels are to the silk watch papers found inside pocket watches from this period. Perhaps the printer supplied those also....

Our 2" diameter example is a very finely stitched pin wheel pincushion with the original Georgian handmade pins inserted around the edge. These early 19th century pins are made in two parts with separate heads.

The pincushion comes within a folded letter, stamped by an early British Denbigh Post Office red stamp for Denbigh Oc 22 1839 (interestingly this is hand stamped just six weeks before the 1839 Great Post Office reform act and in 1840 the introduction of the world's first postage stamps. The new post December 1839 system charging letters by weight bands rather than had previously charged by distance). We believe ours shows a pre-paid 6d (six penny) rate. It is addressed to Mary Maddock, 1 Wesley Place, Chester. To the interior is an old hand written inscription by what looks like a very elderly hand, addressed

"To Eth Maddock Brighton A pincushion presented by K W Maddock to his aunt M G...Maddock as his gift Originally thought it might be acceptable to Lizzy Maddock. 26th Oct 1839"

Condition. The silk is in excellent sound order, this item has been kept safe and cherished. Both printed images are crisp and clear. There is a teeny mark by letter E in the word Queen. All original pins are present, there is an original gap at the top perhaps where a silk hanger could be suspended.

A very special survivor perfect for the British Royal commemorative collector, the early sewing tool collector or for occasional display within a very special doll's house.

Please note the items shown in the final image are not included.
