Item Description

Cast in bronze, this armillary sundial circa 1900 sits upon a limestone pedestal in the neoclassical style. It is a beautiful addition to a country garden where it might be situated among flowerbeds or at the centre of a large courtyard. As opposed to the classic flat sundial, an armillary sundial is characterised by its spherical shape, often referred to as an armillary sphere. Invented by the ancient Greeks, this open spherical framework consists of a number of interlocking metal rings that showcase how they believe the universe worked, with the earth at the centre and the stars moving around it. Look closely and you’ll see that original engraving on this armillary garden sphere remains intact after more than 100 years, including intricate engraving of astrological zodiac signs. This armillary sundial stands proudly on a beautifully carved limestone base. It turns freely, however whether the sundial still indicates the time of day as it once did, we do not know. Either way, it is a beautiful object for a country garden or grounds.
