Item Details

Chinese Pair of Stone Guardian Foo Dogs/Guardian Lions. Referred to as “Foo Dogs” or “Fu Dogs” in western culture, these handsome stone gatekeepers are seen throughout Asia. Traditional symbols of protection, they are made from durable materials like bronze or stone and are presented in pairs to flank either side of a doorway. While their decoration style varies by culture and religion, handsomely carved and highly detailed pairs were universally indicative of power; initially reserved for temples, royal palaces and the wealthiest of families. Weathered finish. Generally excellent condition with crisp details. One of the dogs has previously had its upper jaw reattached. Circa 1920
