18th Century Jean Berain Panels

Vagabond Antiques presents a pair of 18th Century painted panels

France, Circa 1780

” A truly stunning and unusual pair of painted leather panels, the leather is tooled, embossed and then painted with the decoration in the manner of Jean Berain, (Later – probably in 19th century mounted on velvet panels).

Purchased in Stockholm- these panels show distinct similarities with Jean Berain models for the ceiling painting in the parade floor bedroom in the Tessin Palace Stockholm & Jean Berain proposal / sketch for Karl XI ‘s embroidered interior backing ceremonial body, located in Stockholm national museum (inventory number NMH THC 925) ”

Literature: Birgitta von Haslingen, Tessinka Palaset, Stockholm 2002

Vagabond Antiques was founded by Joe Chaffer in 2015.  From an early age Joe was surrounded by his mothers love for all things antique, with her being an antiques dealer for 30 years, Joe certainly has antique dealing in his blood.

After a 15 year career in London with various Men's fashion brands and after taking the lead on multiple projects which incorporated using antique items to create bespoke shop-fit's for menswear concessions, Joe really got the taste for using decorative antiques to create unique interiors.

Joe's focus is now solely on finding beautiful and intriguing items for the home and garden.

Vagabond opened it's first shop in July 2017 in Fittleworth Village, West Sussex, just a 5 minute drive from the well established 'antique' market town of Petworth and close to the historic town of Arundel.

Vagabond Antiques is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm and other times by appointment.
