18th Century Swedish Sofa

An 18th Century Swedish Sofa. Sweden, Stockholm, Circa 1780. Fantastic form to this Swedish sofa, designed and made by master Stockholm chair maker Joseph Ruste active in Stockholm 1772 -1792. At first glance it bares all the hallmarks of a typical French salon sofa however as you look closer you see the scale is bigger than usual with the seat much deeper, then the front rail of the sofa has a subtle curve and the arms are ever so slightly swept out – both these minor changes to the drawing of this piece result in a less boxy and square appearance when viewed face on or in profile, We also love the quirk of the cluster of 3 legs to the back…why not. The frame has been lightly dry scraped to reveal the original 18th Century paints of white & grey, we have then given this sofa a new lease of life with a House of Hackney fabric.

Vagabond Antiques was founded by Joe Chaffer in 2015.  From an early age Joe was surrounded by his mothers love for all things antique, with her being an antiques dealer for 30 years, Joe certainly has antique dealing in his blood.

After a 15 year career in London with various Men's fashion brands and after taking the lead on multiple projects which incorporated using antique items to create bespoke shop-fit's for menswear concessions, Joe really got the taste for using decorative antiques to create unique interiors.

Joe's focus is now solely on finding beautiful and intriguing items for the home and garden.

Vagabond opened it's first shop in July 2017 in Fittleworth Village, West Sussex, just a 5 minute drive from the well established 'antique' market town of Petworth and close to the historic town of Arundel.

Vagabond Antiques is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm and other times by appointment.
