Item Details

The chimney crane was an 18th-century addition to the open kitchen fireplace, a refinement of the simple 'ratchetted' pot-hook. Hung against the back wall of the hearth, it consisted of a swinging bracket with an adjustable sliding arm. This enabled a suspended cooking vessel to be easily moved over any part of the open fire and at various heights. By such means a cook avoided having to touch very hot and sooty pot handles and could control the cooking temperature more easily. With the development of the closed range such objects became obsolete. English circa 1760.
