Item Description
A very fine and early edition, (with open letters) of this print, engraved by Henry Hoppner Meyer after the work by George Romney, the first of many portraits by the artist, commissioned by Charles Greville when she was his mistress.
A woman of great beauty and charm, she rose from humble beginnings, the daughter of a blacksmith, to become the mistress of Greville before marrying his uncle, Sir William Hamilton and then famously becoming the mistress of Horatio Nelson. Romney followed this work by a further twenty or so portraits, his 'divine lady' quickly becoming his muse.
English, published soon after the commission was completed, circa 1782.
This example is trimmed close to the image, retaining the open letters, and is within a very finely carved giltwood frame of the early 20th century. A label to the reverse shows the provenance to be with F.B. Daniell & Son when they were at 32 Cranbourne Street, London, and then with Sir Philip and Lady Haldin, formerly of Lympne Place, Lympne, Hythe, Kent.
