Item Details

Oil on canvas of the quayside at Saint-Tropez by Jacques Salomon (1885–1985) — painter, biographer of Édouard Vuillard, and son-in-law of Ker-Xavier Roussel. The composition looks down onto the old port: a black-hulled steamer at the seawall, sailors in conversation, a stevedore with his dog, and stacked cork bales or barrels beside the octroi pavilion (duties hut). The covered market hall (the Marché Gras, demolished in the 1940s) is visible to the right, corroborating both the location and the 1930 date. Exhibited at Durand-Ruel, Paris in 1971 and illustrated as cat. no. 61 in the accompanying monograph. Acquired directly from the artist’s estate in Saint-Tropez. Signed lower right, in carved giltwood frame. France, 1930.
