Crafted in turned birch and designed to hold a substantial interior plant or potted arrangement. The wide circular bowl, constructed from laminated segments, sits atop a bold urn-shaped column raised on a stepped circular plinth, giving the piece both presence and stability. The bowl and pedestal are ingeniously joined by a large hand-cut wooden screw, allowing the two elements to be separated for transport or maintenance — a traditional Northern European workshop technique rarely encountered in decorative furniture.
The interior retains its original thick black waterproof coating, historically applied to protect the timber from moisture and soil when housing plant pots. The restrained turning and honest construction reflect the practical elegance of Scandinavian design at the turn of the century. A sculptural and highly decorative piece that works equally well as a dramatic interior jardiniere or as a statement pedestal within a contemporary setting.
Circa 1880–1910. A rare and imposing example of Nordic decorative furniture with excellent scale and character.
