Item Details

Handsome pair of original 19th Century hanging glass drug jars from a pharmacy in Victorian England. The large pair of jars were mounted on the metal rings with chains to hang in the pharmacy's front window. Known as 'Carboys' the 'drug' jars were intended to hold colored water to give a medical/scientific effect- however this pair have now been internally spray-silvered which not only gives a highly decorative look but is also much easier and safer to hang . The jars were hand-blown by an artisan glass blower and have pontil marks on the underneaths - see photo. For safety in their hanging position, there are circular pieces of wire running round the shoulders of both jars.

The difference in color tones between the silvered jars comes from the residue of original internal staining before the jars were silvered.. Made circa 1880 - 1900, the jars stand 23" tall x 14" widest diameter- to which add 7 inches in height for the chains. In good used condition with some staining and imperfection, the glass lip above the neck of one of the jars has an ancient repair.
