An exceptionally elegant late 18th century George III period mahogany and marquetry serpentine sideboard, dating from around 1790, in the Sheraton style.
Of very attractive, practical small proportions, this sideboard features a well figured solid mahogany serpentine top with satinwood stringing to the edge and finely crossbanded inlay to the drawers. The front is beautifully shaped, with a combination of convex and concave drawer fronts, veneered in symmetrically arranged flame mahogany and finished with inlaid and crossbanded borders.
The arrangement comprises a long central drawer flanked by two smaller deep drawers on each side, all retaining their period reeded carved brass handles. The piece stands on elegant tapering square legs with satinwood stringing, terminating in spade feet.
The sideboard is in generally very good condition, with a particularly rich colour and beautiful patina. It has been carefully cleaned, restored and waxed in our workshop and is offered ready for immediate use. Keys are supplied.
Over time, the mahogany and satinwood have developed a superb depth of tone, characteristic of the finest late 18th-century English furniture. Originally designed for storing cutlery, silver, table linen and dinnerware, sideboards of this period are highly sought after for their refined cabinetmaking, balanced proportions and quality of materials. This elegantly shaped, smaller scale sideboard is not only a fine example of George III craftsmanship but also an ideal statement piece for any interior seeking an English country house look, equally at home in a dining room, hallway or sitting room.
