An untouched late 18th-century George III period figured solid mahogany chest-on-chest, with a moulded cornice above two short and six long, cockbeaded, graduated oak-lined drawers, fitted with the original finely cast brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, and flanked by reeded, fluted pilasters. The whole stands on its original ogee bracket feet. Circa 1780.
With a beautiful, untouched surface and superb patina, this piece is sturdy, strong and ready to use – the very essence of the English country house look. Over time, the mahogany has developed a wonderful depth of colour that highlights the warmth and figure of the timber, a hallmark of pieces from this era.
Traditionally, chest-on-chests were designed for storing sheets, clothing and textiles, and 18th-century examples are highly prized for their superior cabinetmaking, classic proportions and exquisite choice of materials. This tallboy is not only a testament to exceptional Georgian craftsmanship but also a striking centrepiece for any home that values history and quality. Practical as well as beautiful, this Georgian mahogany chest-on-chest separates into two sections, making it easier to transport and install.
