A superb and well proportioned early 18th-century Queen Anne period burr walnut country house chest on stand, of excellent colour and patina.
The upper section, surmounted by a moulded cornice with solid oak sides sides and a cross-grained moulded waist, is fitted with an arrangement of two short over three graduated long drawers. The lower section is fitted with three further drawers and features a shaped apron, raised on elegant tapering turned legs united by serpentine (wavy) stretchers and terminating in bun feet.
All drawers are oak-lined, with beautifully matched burr walnut veneers, herringbone inlay and cross-banded fronts, retaining mid-18th century replacement brass plate fret handles. The primary frame is in pine, with oak used for the top, sides and drawer construction, and rich walnut veneers to the front. The upper case is constructed with traditional 17th-century pinned mortise-and-tenon joinery.
This fine chest-on-stand, also known as a high chest of drawers or tallboy, is a classic example of Queen Anne period furniture, displaying beautiful burr walnut figuring, refined proportions and outstanding craftsmanship. A piece of great presence and character, it would make a distinguished focal point in any refined interior, whether traditional or contemporary.
