An outstanding late 18th-century George III period mahogany centre table of superb quality, dating from circa 1790. The finely figured rectangular mahogany top, with gently rounded corners, is framed by a broad rosewood cross banding and embellished with decorative brass star inlays and brass stringing to the edge. A refined apron with ebony stringing further accentuates the elegance of the design. The top is raised on a striking quattro form pedestal base centred by a finely turned column. The fluted platform, enriched with intricate ebony marquetry, flows into four gracefully hipped and scrolled legs, each inlaid with ebony and terminating in the original decorative brass castors.
The richly figured mahogany has developed a deep, warm patina, beautifully complemented by the rosewood cross banding and delicate brass and ebony inlay throughout. The table remains in superb original condition, displaying the colour, surface and character so prized by collectors and decorators alike.
A distinguished example of Georgian cabinetmaking, this very fine table successfully combines exceptional craftsmanship, architectural presence and practical function. It would make a magnificent focal point in a hallway, drawing room, library or study, and is an ideal statement piece for any refined interior seeking a genuine period masterpiece.
