This exceptionally elegant early 19th-century Regency period rosewood and brass chiffonier or sideboard is confidently attributed to Gillows, one of the most renowned English cabinetmaking firms of the period.
The upper section is finely executed in figured rosewood, with a pierced brass gallery and mirrored back above a bead moulded shelf. The solid rosewood base, of breakfront outline, contains three short mahogany lined frieze drawers over a pair of doors lined with yellow pleated silk and enclosing fitted shelving. The doors are flanked and divided by reeded pilasters capped with scrolled volutes, and the whole piece stands on handsome lobed bun feet.
Both the construction and the refined overall design are strongly characteristic of Gillows’ work. The rosewood has developed a beautiful, rich patina over time, enhancing the depth, warmth and natural figure of the timber, a hallmark of high quality Regency furniture. Sturdy, strong and ready for immediate use, it offers the ideal blend of decorative presence and everyday practicality. Traditionally, chiffoniers or sideboards were intended for the storage of dinner ware, cutlery, bottles and linens, and examples from the late 18th and early 19th centuries are highly prized for their superior cabinetmaking, balanced proportions and exquisite choice of materials.
This large Regency rosewood chiffonier is not only a testament to exceptional craftsmanship, but also a striking centrepiece for any interior that values history, quality and understated elegance, a functional yet highly decorative sideboard or dresser designed to be enjoyed and used.
