Item Description
19th Century Polychrome Man of the Sea.
A whaler or seaman once holding something, a rope, flag, whaling lance, to be displayed in the window of a fishery/whaling offices.
We were told he probably held a lance rather than a harpoon, but we have also seen similar figures holding rope.
Unless you can find us a time machine then we cannot find absolute provenance, but in all his polychrome glory he would have been painted beautifully, and when first found by the previous owner he wore a blue and white striped top which disintegrated over time.
Our man has been conserved by a professional conservationist.
He stands approx. 68.5 cm tall from the base to his Tar (Jack Tar) hat....they actually painted their hats with tar to keep them dry!
