Karelian birch is a burr wood from a species of birch tree found in the Karelian region between Finland and Russia. Similar in style to birdseye maple and also called 'curly birch', distinctive for its flame curls. Used for highly decorative pieces, in Russia a favourite of the Tsars for Imperial furniture.
