Item Details

Tobia Scarpa, born in Venice in 1935, is one of the defining figures of post-war Italian design. The son of the legendary architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia developed his own design vocabulary in close collaboration with his wife Afra Scarpa, producing furniture, lighting, and objects for the most prestigious Italian manufacturers — among them Cassina, B&B Italia, and Flos. His work is characterised by a Venetian refinement of detail, rigorous attention to material logic, and an instinct for the sculptural that distinguishes it from mere industrial functionalism. This square dining table in chrome represents the modernist direction in Scarpa’s furniture production of the 1970s, when Italian design was at the height of its international influence. The chrome structure — precise, self-assured, and brilliantly reflective — creates a form that is emphatically architectural while remaining entirely appropriate to its domestic function. The square plan, measuring 115 by 115 centimetres, seats four comfortably and has a social equality about it: there is no head of the table in the geometry of the square. At 76 centimetres in height, the table is proportioned for standard dining, and its reflective chrome surface plays with the light of any room, creating a presence that shifts with the time of day and the quality of the light. A distinguished example of Italian modernist furniture design from a celebrated name, this dining table will bring discipline, elegance, and historical significance to any dining space.
