Item Details

This wall art consists of a large ceramic plaque set within a simple, flat-profile solid wood frame. The artwork features a bas-relief treatment highlighted by lines deeply incised into the material. The motif depicts a highly stylized human face, deconstructed according to the geometric codes of the Cubist movement (simultaneously superimposing a frontal and profile view). The raw aesthetic of the composition is reinforced by the application of a dark glaze, a nuanced charcoal grey with metallic reflections, technically imitating the appearance of cast iron or oxidized lead.

This composition is fully in line with the revival of post-war art ceramics, heavily influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso at the Madoura studio (Vallauris). The art of the ceramic wall plaque allowed visual artists of the time to explore the boundary between sculpture and painting. This type of representation, blending primitivism and geometric abstraction, is highly representative of modernist and brutalist decoration from the second half of the 20th century.

Condition report: Very good overall condition. The ceramic plate is intact (no apparent cracks or chips). The wooden frame displays a natural patina and discreet, normal signs of wear for its age. This highly graphic artwork will provide a strong visual focal point, structuring the wall of a contemporary, brutalist, or Mid-Century Modern interior.
