A striking vintage modernist coffee table dating from the 1970s, combining a warm-toned wooden base with an exceptionally decorative fossiliferous stone top.


The rectangular stone top immediately draws the eye with its rich brown, rust and earthy tones. Throughout the surface are numerous naturally occurring fossilised shells and marine organisms, ranging from small spiral forms to several spectacular elongated fossils. These natural inclusions give the stone an almost graphic quality and ensure that every section of the tabletop is completely unique.


The substantial stone slab rests on a beautifully simple wooden frame with gently rounded legs. Its restrained architectural design provides an attractive contrast to the highly expressive fossil stone and gives the table a distinctly 1970s modernist character.


With its generous proportions of 120 × 65 cm and a height of 50 cm, this is a substantial coffee table that would work particularly well as a centrepiece in a living room or lounge.


The combination of natural stone, warm wood and sculptural fossil patterns makes it particularly suitable for Mid-Century Modern, 1970s, organic modern, brutalist and contemporary interiors.

Condition


Good vintage condition with signs of age and previous use consistent with its age. Minor wear is visible to the wooden base and stone top. The natural variations, fossil inclusions, markings and color differences within the stone are inherent characteristics of the material and form an important part of its appearance.
