Item Details

A truly exceptional Venetian grotto armchair in original paint and silver leaf, attributed to Pauly et Cie.

Exquisitely crafted, this chair features naturalistic carvings, with the backrest and seat skilfully shaped to mimic an open scallop shell. Dolphin-shaped arms and legs resembling conch shells and coral further enhance its intricate design.

This chair dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century and is made from either walnut or chestnut, a true testament to fine craftsmanship and artistry.

The finish has a lovely patina, shimmering beautifully in the light. With a charming label to the underneath for the ‘white bedroom’.

Provenance: Penicuik House, Midlothian, Scotland.

While often lacking specific labels, this furniture appears to have originated from Venice, likely crafted by both Pauly et Cie and Remy & Ci. Both esteemed establishments identified themselves as ‘Fabrique de Meubles, Verreries, Marbres,’ highlighting their prowess in furniture, glassware, and marble work.

Historic and sympathetic repair to crack in backrest, structurally sound.
