**Rare Georgian Reverse-Painted Glass Portrait of King George III**
**After Jeremiah Meyer RA, Engraved by Richard Purcell, Circa 1763–1765**


A rare and highly decorative Georgian reverse-painted mezzotint on glass portrait of King George III, engraved by Richard Purcell after a portrait by Jeremiah Meyer RA and published in London by Robert Sayer during the early years of the King's reign.


Rich in colour and visual depth, this exceptional eighteenth-century work combines the refinement of British mezzotint engraving with the specialised craft of reverse painting on glass. Such portraits were among the most fashionable forms of decoration in Georgian Britain, displayed in country houses, libraries, and grand interiors as symbols of status, taste, and loyalty to the Crown.


The young monarch is portrayed in profile wearing court dress and the insignia of the Order of the Garter. The luminous surface and jewel-like quality created by the reverse-painted glass technique give the portrait a striking presence that remains as captivating today as when it was first produced over 260 years ago.


Particularly desirable is the survival of the complete engraved inscription panel, including the artist's attribution, engraver's credit, title, and publisher's imprint. Works retaining such completeness are becoming increasingly difficult to source.


Jeremiah Meyer RA, a founding member of the Royal Academy and Portrait Painter to Queen Charlotte, was one of the most accomplished artists associated with the early Georgian court. The engraving was executed by Richard Purcell, among the finest mezzotint engravers working in Britain during the mid-eighteenth century.


Presented in a bespoke Larson-Juhl frame and protected by premium Artglass AR99 museum glazing, the portrait has been professionally conserved to museum standards while retaining all the character expected of an authentic Georgian work.

**Condition**


Very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with an eighteenth-century reverse-painted glass picture. Minor craquelure, oxidation, and small areas of paint loss are present, all contributing to its authenticity and historic character. Displays beautifully.


An increasingly scarce example of Georgian decorative art, offering exceptional presence for a library, study, country house interior, or distinguished collection of antique portraiture.
