Catalogue Note
The classical story of Apollo and Marsyas centres upon musical rivalry between the god Apollo and the Phrygian satyr Marsyas.
Apollo ultimately prevailed, and the terrible fate of Marsyas transformed the narrative into an enduring allegory concerning artistic ambition, hubris and divine authority.
The present composition interprets the episode as a theatrical outdoor gathering. An older seated figure at the right may represent King Midas, although this identification should be regarded as interpretative rather than definitive.
The surviving turquoise-blue sky, crimson drapery, warm flesh tones and deep woodland hues retain considerable visual richness.
The Artist
Filippo Lauri (1623–1694) was a prominent Roman Baroque painter particularly known for mythological subjects, landscapes and elegantly arranged classical figures.
This unsigned painting is conservatively catalogued as Italian School, 18th Century, after Filippo Lauri, reflecting its relationship to his pictorial tradition without asserting direct authorship.
