Art Deco Scottish Bronze Newfoundland Dog, Dated 1925

An Unusual Period Animalier Sculpture With Historic Scottish K.C. Inscription

Description

A characterful Scottish Art Deco bronze Newfoundland-type dog dating to 1925 and carrying the intriguing period inscription “HELP Scottish K.C. 1925”.

Standing foursquare upon a geometric stepped bronze base, the dog has considerable sculptural presence despite its compact proportions.

The broad head, substantial paws and profuse coat are vigorously modelled, while the surface displays a rich naturally aged dark brown patina with warmer bronze highlights.

Historical Interest

Of particular significance is the inscription “HELP Scottish K.C. 1925”.

Research indicates that “Scottish K.C.” is highly likely to denote the Scottish Kennel Club, founded in Edinburgh in 1881.

The exact significance of “HELP” remains unresolved. Its prominent placement potentially indicates a fundraising, charitable, welfare or appeal-related purpose, although contemporary documentary evidence confirming the precise initiative has not presently been identified.

The Newfoundland itself adds a fascinating dimension. The breed became internationally renowned for maritime lifesaving and was celebrated in British and international culture as a symbol of courage, loyalty and rescue.

The combination of this particular breed with the word “HELP” is consequently intriguing, although any direct relationship between the inscription and maritime rescue remains unproven.

Provenance

Gorringes, Lewes, East Sussex, 3 March 2025, Lot 427.

The original Gorringes auction label remains beneath the bronze and identifies the object as “A bronze of a Newfoundland Terrier”.
