French Bronze La Source Nude Figure After Auguste Moreau Circa 1900

After Auguste Moreau (French, 1834–1917)

Description

An elegant French Belle Époque bronze of La Source (The Spring), catalogued as after Auguste Moreau (1834–1917) and dating to approximately 1900.

The composition depicts a graceful nude female figure turning gently while gathering a sweeping length of drapery around her body. The fabric moves through the sculpture in broad spiralling folds, creating an attractive sense of movement reminiscent of flowing water.

The classical female form and allegorical subject are combined with the fluidity and organic line characteristic of French decorative sculpture around the turn of the 20th century, giving the work particular appeal within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The bronze retains an attractive **brown-green patina with warm golden-bronze highlights** across raised areas. It is mounted upon a shaped polished **black marble base**, believed to be original, which provides an effective contrast with the bronze.

Auguste Moreau was a member of the celebrated Moreau family of French sculptors. His work became particularly associated with graceful allegorical figures, youthful female subjects and compositions incorporating flowing fabric and natural motifs.

Documented signed versions of Moreau's La Source are known. As this example is unsigned and smaller than a documented large-scale signed version, it is conservatively and responsibly catalogued as after Auguste Moreau, based upon the model and stylistic comparison.

No foundry mark has been identified and the sculpture is therefore not assigned to a particular foundry or casting process.

A highly decorative French bronze with an elegant silhouette, substantial weight and excellent sculptural presence.
