Introduction

Sitter: James Robert Creighton, 1844–1896
Date: 1895
Place: London
Medium: Solid white marble

Catalogue Note
Creighton is represented with his head subtly turned from the frontal axis. Deep-set eyes with drilled pupils, strongly articulated features, pronounced moustache and elongated sideburns create a powerful individual likeness.
The broad classically conceived mantle enveloping the shoulders and exposed upper chest gives the portrait a formal commemorative character.
Chavalliaud later executed the portrait relief for the Creighton Memorial in Carlisle, erected following the sitter’s death. The precise relationship of the present marble to that later commission is unconfirmed, but its 1895 date demonstrates that Chavalliaud had represented Creighton sculpturally during his lifetime.
The Sitter
James Robert Creighton was a prominent Carlisle businessman, long-serving city councillor and twice Mayor.
Following his death in 1896, public subscription funded the Creighton Memorial.
