Edith Alice Simkins (1870–1949)
Runaway Horses (also recorded as “After the Charge”), 1939
Oil on canvas, in gilt frame
A large and highly dramatic oil painting by Edith Alice Simkins, signed and dated 1939, depicting riderless horses in full flight through smoke and dust. The scene is presented as an aftermath moment rather than a heroic charge: empty saddles, scattered kit and a fractured landscape shift the narrative away from pageantry and towards loss, urgency and survival.
The central chestnut horse is powerfully modelled, with carefully described tack and convincing musculature, while a rearing white horse to the right introduces a sharp vertical accent that heightens the sense of panic and movement. The subject is believed (based on visual interpretation) to evoke the opening Western Front campaign of 1914 and the “Great Retreat” period; this contextual identification is offered for historical interest only, as the painting is not inscribed to a specific action.
Simkins is documented as a member and exhibitor of the Ipswich Art Club (1935–1949). Reference records note her exhibiting an oil titled “After the Charge” in 1943, supporting the known alternate historic title associated with this composition.
