Oil on Canvas Laid on Board, 1950s–60s
A charming mid century British oil painting depicting three Cocker Spaniels in an intimate tiered head study. Executed on unstretched canvas laid on board and presented in its original period gilt frame, this is a warm and characterful piece of traditional canine art.
Perfectly scaled for decorative interiors, the composition focuses entirely on expression, texture and tonal harmony.


The Composition
The three spaniels are arranged in a classic pyramidal formation, creating balance and gentle movement within a compact format. Each head overlaps subtly, giving depth while maintaining clarity.
The coats are painted in rich chestnut and mahogany tones, heightened with honeyed highlights that suggest the soft sheen of well-groomed fur. The modelling across the muzzles is delicately handled, moving from warm caramel to deeper shadow. A cool grey-blue background provides contrast and allows the warmth of the dogs to stand forward beautifully.
Brushwork is refined and controlled, particularly in the flowing ears and expressive eyes, which are finished with subtle highlights to give lifelike presence.

Attributed to Dorothy Alexandra Johnson (1902–1988), a Nottingham-trained painter known for her mid-20th-century canine portraiture. The work is described as in the manner of Maud Alice Earl, echoing the dignified Victorian spaniel portrait tradition for which Earl became internationally recognised.
No visible signature. Attribution based on stylistic comparison, subject matter and period.
Frame & Presentation
Housed in a 1950s–60s gilt moulded frame with warm golden tones that complement the spaniels’ rich colouring. Minor age-related wear to the frame consistent with period.
