Mid-Century Watercolour Portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt by Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953), Signed British School
Description
A characterful mid-20th century watercolour portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, painted circa 1940s by Birmingham artist Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953).
Presented as a three-quarter bust, Roosevelt is shown turned slightly toward the viewer, dressed in a dark suit with bow tie and his distinctive pince-nez spectacles. The composition has a quiet authority, with a calm, composed expression that gives the piece both presence and approachability.
The painting is executed in watercolour on paper, using soft, controlled washes and a restrained palette typical of the period. The handling is delicate and assured, allowing the natural tone of the paper to bring warmth and subtlety to the portrait.
Artist
Beatrice S. Bullock was a Birmingham-based artist active in the early to mid-20th century. Her address at 14 Kingsleigh Road, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham is inscribed on the reverse.
She is recorded in Birmingham museum and archival sources, and exhibited locally, including at Park House, Handsworth Park. She also donated work to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1938. Her work forms part of a recognised body associated with the Handsworth Historical Society.
Notes
A particularly appealing example of a British artist depicting an iconic American figure during the wartime period. The portrait combines historical interest with decorative charm, making it equally suited to a traditional interior or a more eclectic setting.
