Napoleon I French School Oil Portrait After Robert Lefèvre c.1870


A substantial 19th-century historical portrait of Napoleon I, circa 1870, after and adapted from Robert Lefèvre (1755–1830), presenting the Emperor in Imperial Guard uniform with Légion d’honneur insignia, ceremonial sword and an imposing gilt-framed oval format.

Description


An imposing 19th-century portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte represented in formal Imperial military dress.


The dark blue military coat and brilliant white uniform front provide the principal tonal contrast.


Gold-fringed epaulettes, broad red sash and prominent breast insignia communicate rank and ceremonial authority.


Napoleon's hand rests upon an elaborate sword hilt, reinforcing the military character of the composition.


Robert Lefèvre Connection


Detailed comparative research indicates that the portrait is most convincingly connected with the official Napoleonic portrait tradition of Robert Lefèvre.


Lefèvre produced numerous portraits of Napoleon in military and ceremonial dress.


A signed 1805 portrait depicts Napoleon as Colonel of the Foot Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard wearing the cross and Grand Eagle of the Légion d’honneur.


The present unknown artist appears to have adapted this established imagery into a larger oval composition.
