# British Mid-Century Equestrian Oil Painting of a Grey Mare & Chestnut Foal After Henry William Banks Davis RA

A beautifully executed British mid-century oil on canvas depicting a graceful grey mare standing protectively beside her chestnut foal within a tranquil coastal landscape. Inspired by Henry William Banks Davis RA's celebrated Victorian composition *Mother and Son*, this hand-painted work combines timeless equestrian charm with refined decorative appeal.

The composition captures the quiet relationship between mare and foal with remarkable warmth and sensitivity. Carefully observed anatomy, soft tonal modelling and confident brushwork bring the horses to life, while the open shoreline, distant sea and expansive sky create a wonderful sense of light, space and atmosphere. The harmonious palette of soft greys, warm chestnut browns and muted coastal blues makes the painting an effortless addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Executed in oil on canvas with a later board backing for additional stability, the painting retains an attractive painterly quality throughout. Whether displayed in a country house, townhouse, library, hallway, drawing room or equestrian property, it offers timeless decorative character and understated elegance.

Henry William Banks Davis RA (1833–1914) was one of Britain's foremost Victorian painters of horses and rural life. His original composition *Mother and Son*, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881, became one of his most admired works and continues to inspire collectors today. This painting is correctly catalogued as **After Henry William Banks Davis RA** and should be regarded as a skilful mid-century interpretation rather than an original work by the artist.

The painting bears an indistinct monogram to the lower right which has not been positively identified.

Presented in a quality Larson-Juhl stepped gilt frame, the work is ready to hang and enjoy immediately.
