Introduction

An exceptionally decorative small-scale Victorian oil by Oliver Clare, combining botanical detail with the intimacy of a bird’s nest hidden amongst the undergrowth.

White and soft pink blossom rises from a densely painted mossy bank. Tangled branches and deep green foliage create a dark natural backdrop, while four blue eggs nestled at lower right introduce a striking point of colour.

Catalogue Note

Clare repeatedly explored flowers and nests upon moss-covered banks.

Several documented compositions use the same 8 × 10-inch format recorded on the historic Haynes Fine Art label attached to this painting.

The subject therefore represents an established strand within Clare’s still-life oeuvre.

The Bird’s Nest and Four Blue Eggs

The eggs may represent those of the European Starling, their blue colouring and clutch size being suggestive of that species, although the identification remains tentative.

The Artist

Oliver Clare belonged to a family of British still-life painters associated particularly with Birmingham.

His father George and brother Vincent were also artists. Oliver’s highly detailed technique and recurring use of flowers, fruit and mossy banks became distinctive characteristics of his work.
