Antique Scottish Oil Painting, Trout Fishing Still Life with Creel by James B. Russell, c.1914
A refined and atmospheric Scottish sporting oil painting from the Edwardian period, depicting two freshly caught brown trout tipped from a wicker creel onto the grassy bank of a Highland burn. Painted circa 1914, this work captures the quiet satisfaction of a successful day’s angling and reflects a deep understanding of both landscape and fish.
Executed in oil on canvas, the trout are rendered with careful observation and technical skill. Their silvery bellies and delicately spotted flanks are built up through subtle tonal gradations, giving a convincing sense of texture and weight. In contrast, the creel, riverbank, and wooded background are handled with looser, more suggestive brushwork, creating atmosphere while keeping the focus firmly on the catch. The diagonal placement of the fish adds depth and gentle movement to the composition.
The subject is rooted in Scotland’s angling tradition and is associated with Culroy Burn in Ayrshire, a tributary of the River Doon known for brown trout fishing. The named location adds authenticity and regional interest, appealing to collectors of Scottish sporting art and country house pictures.
The painting is by James B. Russell (1867–1956), a Scottish artist born in Edinburgh who grew up within a family tradition of specialist fish painting. His father, John Bucknell Russell, was renowned for highly accurate carved and painted salmon produced for sporting patrons. James continued this lineage into the early 20th century, developing a slightly looser and more atmospheric style while retaining exceptional realism in his depiction of fish.
Signed “J. B. Russell” in red to the lower corner.
Presented in a moulded gilt frame bearing the trade label Weir & Clyde, Carvers & Gilders, Glasgow, supporting an early 20th-century date and adding period authenticity.
An attractive and evocative sporting picture, well suited to traditional and eclectic interiors, fishing lodges, libraries, or country houses, and a desirable example of Scottish angling art from the Edwardian era.
