The Hunting Stud Equestrian Oil Painting After J. F. Herring Senior Circa 1900
A highly decorative British equestrian oil painting depicting four hunting horses attended by grooms within the atmospheric interior of a traditional country stable.
Painted in oil on canvas around 1900, the composition was executed after The Hunting Stud, John Frederick Herring Senior's celebrated sporting painting of 1845, now held in the Tate collection.
One grey and three bay hunters stand beneath substantial timber beams while the stable staff prepare them for the day. One groom carefully examines a raised hoof, another attends to the tack and a further figure steadies a bay horse by its bridle. Two huntsmen dressed in traditional scarlet coats and black riding hats confer in the background.
The scene celebrates the discipline, preparation and skilled work behind the British hunting tradition. Rather than presenting the speed and excitement of the chase, it offers an intimate view of the country stable and the close working relationship between horses and their attendants.
Composition and Colour
The four horses are arranged across the broad horizontal composition, making this an especially effective statement painting for a country house, equestrian interior, library, study or sporting collection.
The pale grey horse forms a luminous contrast with the three richly coloured bays. Chestnut, ochre, sienna and warm umber define the horses, timber beams and straw bedding. Cream highlights enliven the manes, harness and polished coats, while the scarlet hunting jackets provide vivid accents of colour.
The painter combines carefully observed equine anatomy with softer, more atmospheric handling through the background. Fine brushwork describes the horses, bridles and saddlery, becoming broader through the straw and shadowed stable recesses.
After John Frederick Herring Senior
John Frederick Herring Senior lived from 1795 to 1865 and became one of the foremost British equestrian painters of the 19th century.
Before establishing his artistic career, Herring worked as a coach driver and became popularly known as the artist coachman. His practical familiarity with horses informed his convincing treatment of their anatomy, movement and individual character.
Herring's original painting The Hunting Stud was completed in 1845. Its design was also circulated through sporting prints associated with Fores's Stable Scenes, helping it remain popular with country-house and equestrian collectors.
The catalogue term after John Frederick Herring Senior identifies this as a later painting based upon his recognised composition. It does not claim that the present canvas was painted by Herring or his studio.

Frame and Presentation
Recently presented in a richly ornamented Larson-Juhl gilt moulded frame selected to complement the painting's warm sporting palette.
The frame is fitted with AR70 anti-reflective glazing, which reduces distracting reflections and provides approximately 70 percent ultraviolet protection.

Condition
The original canvas remains securely stretched and structurally stable. Fine age-related craquelure is visible across parts of the surface.
The paint retains good colour and clarity, with minor historic losses, localised retouching and areas of overpainting, principally around the outer background edges. Scattered foxing-type spotting or staining is visible in places.
The varnish is evenly toned and contributes to the painting's warm, mellow appearance. The recently fitted gilt frame presents well and the painting is ready to hang.
