Overview
A beautiful late Victorian oil painting by the accomplished British genre painter William Oliver, depicting an elegant young woman seated in a secluded garden beneath a magnificent crimson-red parasol.
Painted circa 1875–1885, the sitter wears an ivory gown enriched with gold trim and a flowing blush-pink satin sash. Holding a delicate rose, she looks calmly towards the viewer with an air of quiet elegance and contemplation.
The vivid parasol forms a striking focal point against the softer greens of the garden. Its rich colour, romantic subject and elegant vertical format give the painting exceptional decorative presence.

Subject and Composition
The painting portrays a fashionable young woman seated within a sheltered garden setting. Her ivory dress, pink satin sash and flower-trimmed hat reflect the romantic ideals and refined fashions of late Victorian society.
William Oliver’s accomplished technique is apparent in the delicate modelling of the sitter’s face, luminous flesh tones and carefully observed hands. Sensitive brushwork creates convincing textures across the silk, satin and lace elements of her costume.
The comparatively restrained garden background keeps attention firmly upon the figure. Crimson, ivory, antique gold, blush pink and natural green combine to create a balanced and sophisticated colour palette.
The painting is sometimes known within the art market as The Red Parasol. This is understood to be a modern descriptive title rather than its original Victorian exhibition title. The sitter remains unidentified and is believed to represent one of Oliver’s idealised female subjects.
The Artist
William Oliver, born William Oliver Williams (1823–1901), was an accomplished British Victorian genre painter specialising in elegant female subjects and romantic narrative scenes.
Working professionally under the name William Oliver, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. Fifteen of his paintings were accepted for exhibition by the Society of British Artists during his career.
His works frequently carried romantic or literary titles and reflected Victorian ideals of beauty, sentiment, refinement and grace.
Examples of his paintings are represented in public collections including the Royal Collection Trust, Birmingham Museums Trust and Rotherham Museums.

Professional Conservation
The painting previously underwent a historic professional full relining.
During 2026, it received comprehensive conservation by Vanessa Andrew M.A., Fine Art Conservator, whose studio is based at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum.
The treatment included surface cleaning, consolidation of unstable paint, removal of aged varnish and non-original overpainting, conservation repair of a historic canvas tear, strip-lining, professional filling, sympathetic retouching and the application of conservation-grade protective varnishes.
An earlier restoration had covered original highlights on the sitter’s white dress. These additions were carefully removed during treatment, revealing William Oliver’s original brushwork and restoring the intended effects of light, texture and modelling.
A comprehensive professional conservation report and supporting invoice accompany the painting.
Frame
Recently professionally reframed in a premium Larson-Juhl gilt moulded frame selected to complement the painting’s Victorian character and warm colour palette.
The reverse is protected by a modern backing board. The historic Swedish dealer’s and biographical labels have been carefully preserved beneath it.
The painting is fitted for hanging and ready for immediate wall display.

Before reframing, detailed photographs were taken of the historic relined canvas, nineteenth-century stretcher and original Swedish labels. These elements remain preserved beneath the modern protective backing board.
