Introduction
A wonderfully characterful late-Victorian oil painting depicting a prized Shorthorn bull standing proudly within an open pastoral landscape.
The animal's warm russet, chestnut, cream and white colouring creates a striking focal point against green pasture and an atmospheric blue-grey sky.
A mature tree frames the scene, giving the composition the traditional appearance of a British country painting.

The bull is represented in full profile so that its distinctive markings and substantial conformation can be clearly appreciated.
This direct presentation places the painting within the British tradition of livestock portraiture, where important agricultural animals were celebrated individually.

Research into the reverse identifies the historic B-in-lozenge registered trade mark with very high confidence as associated with **Bourgeois Aîné, Paris**.
The stretcher additionally carries the dimensions 46 × 38 cm, corresponding to the French F8 standard format.
The combination provides a particularly interesting insight into the painting's physical construction and later-19th-century material history.
