A wonderfully evocative Victorian military portrait depicting a handsome young British Army officer in scarlet uniform, believed to portray Ensign Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves (1840–1860) of the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot.
Painted in oil on canvas around 1859–1860, this striking portrait captures the sitter half-length, dressed in the iconic scarlet tunic of the British Army with brass buttons, dark regimental facings and a crimson officer's sash. His direct gaze, fair hair and youthful features create an immediate connection with the viewer, giving the portrait both strength and remarkable presence.
The rich scarlet tones of the uniform contrast beautifully against the darker background, making this an eye-catching decorative piece that would sit effortlessly within both traditional and contemporary interiors. Whether displayed in a library, study, drawing room or country house setting, it possesses the timeless appeal and character that only genuine nineteenth-century portraiture can provide.
Adding considerably to its intrigue is a handwritten inscription on the reverse which reads:
"Conway Reeves – Died Aged 19 – Best Looking Man in British Army."
Research suggests the sitter is probably Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves of County Cork, Ireland, who served as an Ensign in the 58th Regiment of Foot and died in 1860 at just nineteen years of age. While the identification cannot be considered absolutely conclusive, military and genealogical records provide compelling supporting evidence.
There is a touching poignancy to the portrait, which appears to have been painted during the final year of the young officer's life. It survives today as both a decorative work of art and a fascinating glimpse into Victorian military history.
The painting is presented in a later gilt frame and is ready to hang.
