Introduction

Two white cottages punctuate a broad mountain landscape constructed from mustard ochre, charcoal, slate grey and earthy greens and browns. Belderbos has organised the composition around the contrast between rural habitation and the surrounding mountain environment.
The cottages appear comparatively small within the extensive landscape. Their simplified white façades and dark roofs provide moments of sharp tonal contrast amongst the broader passages of ochre, grey and charcoal.
The road or mountain track introduces movement, leading the eye from the lower foreground into the landscape and towards the distant cottage.
Above, the expansive grey sky is not merely background but an important component of the composition, contributing to the impression of exposed terrain and rapidly changing Welsh weather.

Andrew Belderbos is a contemporary British painter born in 1969 and based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.
Landscape forms an established strand within his artistic practice, with documented subjects including Wales, the Lake District and Northern Ireland.
North Wales has repeatedly provided subject matter for his paintings. His documented *Tryfan* of 2020 was inspired by the rugged landscape and weather of Snowdonia, while other work demonstrates his use of impasto and palette-knife technique in response to the North Welsh landscape.
