Item Details

A striking demi-lune side table, centred on an 18th century French terracotta fragment finely modelled in high relief with playful putti among vines, fruit, and floral garlands. Such imagery was a hallmark of the French Rococo period, symbolising fertility, festivity, and the abundance of nature.

Fragments like this were produced by workshops in Paris and the Loire Valley, supplying terracotta sculpture for hôtels particuliers, châteaux, and gardens. These ateliers created lively putti panels and festooned reliefs to ornament façades and interiors. The spirited modelling of this piece, with its soft detailing and rich symbolism, reflects that tradition.

Later repurposed as furniture, the fragment has been sympathetically set into a stone-composite backing and finished with a marble demi-lune top, giving it both sculptural presence and practical function. The surface retains its warm terracotta tones with gentle wear and patination, evoking centuries of history and outdoor weathering.

This rare example bridges architectural with decorative furniture, making it a unique addition to any interior or garden. Its scale and subject matter lend it both romance and gravitas, whether used as a console in a hallway or as a statement in a conservatory or orangery.
