Item Details

This delightful and mischievous mid-20th-century composite stone figure of Pan draws on a classical vocabulary long associated with formal European garden design. Pan, god of the wild, woodland and rustic music, is shown playing his panpipes, with a lion pelt draped across his shoulder — a motif rooted in pastoral imagery and well suited to architectural garden settings.

The modelling is confident and balanced, with clear casting detail that has gently softened over time. Subtle lichen growth and surface weathering allow the sculpture to sit naturally within an established landscape.

The figure would be particularly effective within a structured, Italianate-inspired garden: placed on a stone terrace, aligned along a gravel walk, or set within an architectural framework of walls, steps and clipped hedging. It would sit beautifully against mellow stone, within a loggia or shallow alcove, or positioned to terminate a view or articulate a change in level. Equally, it could act as a quiet focal point beside water, within a parterre, or framed by cypress, bay or yew, where sculpture becomes part of a composed sequence of spaces.

A refined example of 20th-century classical garden statuary, designed to integrate harmoniously with formal planting, masonry and carefully ordered outdoor rooms.
