Item Details

A rare trio of LEFCO (LEEDS FIRE CLAY COMPANY) oat glazed terracotta animals of a perched eagle, a seated monkey and a squirrel nibbling a nut, manufactured in the 1890’s. Very true to life, decorative pieces that stand on glazed square plinths. The plinths stand at 74cm high and animals approx. 38cm high.

Fire clay was first discovered and manufactured in 1859 making decorative bricks and tiles in buff terracotta architectural terracotta. From 1880 they also made art pottery such as vases and decorative domestic items. But in 1889 the company merged with other Yorkshire companies to found The Leeds Fireclay Co. Ltd., the largest in the country.

These are a superb example of LEFCO work, these animals, though made in Leeds were often retailed in London’s Liberty store. Very rare to find a trio with their associated plinths. A few corner chips consistent with age. Apparent restoration binding the squirrel atop its base, but otherwise is superb condition.
