Item Description

The crocodile leather strap rectangular wristwatch in 9ct gold, having a beautifully time-worn face with prominent art deco numbering, import marked for London 1924, and in working order surviving from the heights of the Art Deco period.

The condition is generally good but it will need some attention ideally. The movement is running when wound, there is no engraving with slight wear and a minor dent on side of caseback and it detaches. The strap is later and is marked and of good quality.

The year of 1924 in England saw the Meteorological Office issuing its first broadcast Shipping Forecast, John Logie Baird sending the first rudimentary television pictures over a short distance and the Sunday Express becomes the first newspaper to publish a crossword.

The numbers and face are both characteristically Art Deco in style, with this style being used by Dali in a surrealist manner. The term Art Deco encompasses the distinctive styles in art, architecture and design, and is typified by bright bold colours, and stylized designs derived from the onset of industrialism, as well as artistic movements such as modernism, cubism, and futurism. It is one of the best loved, most influential, instantly recognisable, international, and elegant of all artistic periods.

The face of this watch is as beautiful as a painting, and for that, it chimes with us.
