Item Details

The beautifully evocative wall mirrors, retaining the original mercury glass, now wonderfully foxed, each of sectioned walnut tabernacle form with architectural tops, the wholes surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century Italy and from the estate of the late William Lloyd George, 3rd Viscount Tenby (1927-2023).

The mirrors are in decorative condition and are attractive in their originality and the fact they have not been meddled with. The original mercury glass plate is worn and totally original, the walnut has not been polished in recent times and there is a very small amount of sporadic worm to the undersides; please refer to the photographs for a full visual reference.

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw the development of decorative mirrors in Italy. The cylinder process, where cylinders of glass were blown then split open and laid flat, had some limitations meaning that only small plates could be made, so several pieces of glass would be used to create a single mirror as we see here.

The mirrors were part of the estate of the late William Lloyd George, 3rd Viscount Tenby (1927-2023), who was the grandson of David Lloyd George, 1st Earl of Dwyfor (1863-1945) the British Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922 and during WWI. William Lloyd George was a British peer and army officer and was among the 90 hereditary peers elected to remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999. Tenby served as a Justice of the Peace for Hampshire, including as chair of the north-east Hampshire magistrates from 1990 to 1994, and led the Council for the Protection of Rural England in the county. He died on 7 June 2023, at the age of 95.

Achingly beautiful, completely untouched and with a hugely appealing provenance.
