Item Details

The charming sunshine yellow painted French trinket box in the form of a rabbit, with red eyes and black painted facial details, the top section being hinged and sliding to reveal a vacant hollowed out paprika red interior, the whole being provincially made and of folk art interest.

The box has had some historic repairs as photographed with the ears and front legs being later replacements. The hinged top works as intended and the paintwork is wonderfully untouched.

The rabbit, with its prolific nature, has long been associated with fertility and new life, making it a fitting symbol for spring and Easter. Both the Fauve and the Papillon, two of about 60 regional types of domesticated rabbit in 19th-century France, became registered breeds in the 20th century. They hold a special place in French cuisine, reflecting the country's rural traditions and love for game meat

Colour and texture to die for; this would make for an enchanting gift.
