Item Details

The very attractive pair of buff painted plaster lions, each standing statant with beautifully textured surfaces and with attentive faces, surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.

The lions are in good overall condition with one historic repair to one of the examples legs as photographed. The surfaces are beautifully timeworn commensurate with age.

Lions played a significant symbolic and aesthetic role in the Regency period. They were frequently used in heraldry, art, and architecture, often representing power, strength, and royalty. Lions were also part of the "menagerie" at the Tower of London, and their presence in art and everyday objects reflected a fascination with exotic animals and a desire to emulate ancient civilisations.

A highly decorative pair being quintessential symbols of English history, from the medieval to Regency and beyond; perfect for a mantlepiece.
